Characteristics
• Physical Properties: Typically white, waxy, semi-transparent material, odorless and non-toxic. Polyethylene of different densities varies in hardness, melting point, etc. For example, HDPE has a melting point of around 130°C, while LDPE has a relatively lower melting point.
• Chemical Properties: Exhibits good chemical stability, insoluble in common solvents at room temperature, and resistant to acid and alkali corrosion. However, it may swell under high temperatures or in the presence of organic solvents.
Production Methods
• High-Pressure Method: Under high pressure (100-300 MPa) and high temperature (160-300°C), with trace amounts of oxygen or organic peroxides as initiators, ethylene undergoes free radical polymerization to produce LDPE.
• Low-Pressure Method: Using Ziegler-Natta catalysts or chromium-based catalysts, ethylene polymerizes under relatively low pressure (1-10 MPa) and temperature (60-100°C) to produce HDPE or LLDPE.
• Other Fields: Widely used in insulation layers for wires and cables, toys, daily necessities, and other areas.
• Packaging Field: Serves as the primary raw material for various films, such as cling film for food packaging and shopping bags.
• Construction Field: Can be made into pipes for water supply, drainage, and gas transportation, and is also used to produce insulation materials and waterproof membranes.
• Agricultural Field: Used to manufacture agricultural films that provide insulation, moisture retention, and pest prevention, thereby improving crop yield and quality.
